Stop Receiving Spam with Cpanel
We present you with some useful tips that you can use for getting less amount of spam in your
inbox .
First thing you should NOT do is to accept mails comming from default addresses meaning fictive
users mailboxes because afterwards , all the unrouted mail will land up in your mailbox , using
the alocated resources of your account and the space on your disk.
To explain the process further , spam mail means that a mail which is sent to
whatever@yourcompany.com will still be received by you in mailbox@yourcompany.com ( mailbox
being your Cpanel username) .This is the process spammers ,worms and viruses use to send mass
messages and replicate themselves.A common custom is for spammers to generate a type of email
address you are most likely to receive and open.
Go to Cpanel and after you login click on Mail . Then choose Default Address and below click
the Set Default Address option.
A drop-down menu will appear in which you will have to select the domain. Personally I sugest
you to do this over and over again for all listed domains .
In the field reffered as “to:” type the following
“fail: no such address here”.
Don’t forget to save the changes by clicking the “Change” button.
Cpanel E-mail Filtering - Automatically Filter Your EMail
A nice little feature that Cpanel has is the capability to use Mail Filters . This addon will
first examine all your incoming mails , arrange them then do the specified action you put
there and present you with the results.
This tool , although it can save you an important amount of time that you wasted on browsing
spams, is for some unknown reason seldomly used . For instance you know that viruses like Sober
use to send messages with common subjects so , acordingly , you can setup the filter to delete
any incoming mail that matches with those subjects . This is a good way to prevent virus
infections and to protect your inbox from being flooded with spam.
Using the same routine - Cpanel login select Mail and then E-mail Filtering and at the bottom
top select the Add Filter option.
You will be presented with two drop-down menus.
The first one shows you what is being filtered: Subj, From, To, Body, Any Header, SpamAss asin
Spam Header.
The seccond drop down is for the filteration methods : equals ,contains, matches regex, and
begins with.
The text you wish to filter must be entered in the input box .
For instance if you want to filter spam messages with the same subject you should proceed as
follows :Let’s say spam messages all contain the subject line: “Loose some weight now!”
To eliminate it you must create the following type of filter :
What ? Subject
How ? Equals
Filter ? Loose some weight now!
Destination ? Discard
This filter setup will discard automatically all the mails you receive containing the subject
line ” Loose some weight now!” and those spams won’t even get in your inbox.
After the filter definition is completed , the next step is to test it . Do do this, type in the
test window a message that you would want to be filtered . To be sure the filter funcions in
the desired way , enter all the fields such as subject, from address and message body
BE CAREFUL ! - If you don’t set up the filters the vaild mail could be deleted along with the
spam so pay extra attention because you could find yourself in the situation of never receiving
important mail and the sender will never know it.
Accept Mails Only from Trusted Senders
There is a tool calles BoxTrapper Spam Trap which can be a strong ally in your battle against
spam .How does it function? Well , when someone sends you mail, they will receive a message
right after emailing you that they will have to answer . If they do so , they are being put on a
whi te list and from then on they won’t have to respond at any messages and their mails will be
considered as being safe and they are validated . Viruses or spammers alomst never respond to
messages, so if someone responds , you can give them the pass-ticket and reduce spam a lot.
